Vicari Castle

For those who would like to visit the city of Pisa and are interested in exploring its surroundings, take a trip to Vicari Castle. The castle stands in the heart of the ancient medieval village of Lari, which was inhabited as early as the Etruscan times. The fortress, which dates back to around the year 1000, reached its greatest glory after 1400 as the seat of the Florentine Vicariate. For over four centuries, about a third of the present Pisa district was governed from Lari Castle. The vicariate was abolished when the Grand Duchy of Tuscany joined the Kingdom of Italy, but Lari remained home to a civil court until the late 1960s. The fortress is currently managed by the Cultural Association "Il Castello," which handles its cultural and tourism activities. One of its unique features is that it houses the traditional pasta factory, Pastificio MARTELLI, which is well-known in the region. So, if you're in the mood for some delicious, high-quality pasta, don't forget to visit this charming place and take advantage of our accommodation services in traditional estates near Pisa!
